Eligibility

Target Audience: This program is intended for clinical educators in any health profession who regularly precept, supervise, and/or teach learners or other clinical staff at BCH on an ongoing basis and would benefit from more formal training in clinical teaching. Applicants must have opportunities to incorporate new learning and concepts in their teaching or supervisory role throughout the duration of the program. 

Support from Leadership: Applicants must have the expressed support of their supervisor, program director, chair, or chief for consideration, given the program's time commitment across 2 years. Applicants must review the program requirements with their supervisor before applying.

BCH Academy Membership: Applicants must have a minimum of one year as a BCH Academy. While you are an active Teaching Certificate Member, you will not be expected to also meet the BCH Academy 6 credit/year minimum and will not be required to submit an Annual Report to renew your membership.

Program Requirements

Core Seminars & Academy Sessions

  • Live participation in the 6 core seminars (all virtual) over 2 years focusing on the understanding and application of clinical teaching principles. Each core seminar requires preparatory work and a post-reflection assignment.
    1. Understanding and applying adult learning principles
    2. Leading interactive teaching sessions
    3. Providing effective learner feedback
    4. Designing and evaluating teaching sessions
    5. Teaching critical thinking skills
    6. Effectively supervising trainees and students.
  • Live participation at 4 elective BCH Academy Seminars of your choice over 2 years.

Individual Professional Development Activities

  • Observation of a master teacher in a clinical teaching setting and debrief of the observation.
  • Peer observation of your own teaching and personalized feedback.
  • Two coaching calls with a senior educator, who will discuss your teaching goals and progress.
  • One coaching call with program directors to discuss career goals in health professions education.

Time Commitment

This program may be attained over a two-year cycle and is estimated at 2-3 hours of time a month.
